I am a big fan of Virginia Woolf and have read a lot about her and of her books. “The Waves” is not one of my favourites as I really had trouble to understand but I love the style and the music Patti Smith chose to do the reading.

Thank for the video to   via http://www.youtube.com

Song Lyric Sunday ~ Seasick Steve

Standard

Ok, more discoveries for you and Helen’s Song Lyric Sunday:

The first time I heard of Seasick Steve was a few years ago when he dared to be the VIP on Top Gear’s reasonably priced car. Jeremy Clarkson apparently was a fan already and I just thought “interesting”.

In the first hours of 2017, I stumbled upon him again and again on Jools Hollands “Hootenanny”. There Seasick Steve was with a song (can’t remember which ~ sorry the black dog plays with my mind 😉 ) and a funnily dressed lady doing tap dancing.

A rather strange mixture in my opinion but it made me listen and I liked what I heard. So I thought I bring him to you via Helen’s “Song Lyric Sunday”

“Gentle On My Mind”

It’s knowin’ that your door is always open
And your path’s free to walk
That makes me tend to leave my sleepin’ bag
Rolled up and stashed behind your couch

It’s knowin’ I’m not shackled by forgotten words or bonds
Some ink stains that have dried upon some lines
That keeps you on the backroads, by the rivers of my memories
Keeps you ever gentle on my mind

It’s not clingin’ to the rocks and ivy
Planted on the columns now that binds me
Or somethin’ that somebody said
‘Cause I thought we fit together walkin’

It’s knowin’ that your world will not be cursin’ or forgivin’
When I walk along some railroad track and find
It’s you wavin’ from the backroads by the rivers of my memory
Ever smilin’, ever gentle on my mind

Although the wheat fields and the clotheslines
And the junkyards and the highways come between us
Some other woman cryin’ to her mother
‘Cause she turned and I was gone

I still run in silence, tears of joy might stain my face
And the summer sun might burn me till I’m blind
But not to where I cannot see you walkin’ on the backroads
By the rivers flowin’ gentle on my mind

I’d dip my cup of soup back from them gurglin’
Cracklin’ cauldron in some trainyard
An’ my beard roughenin’ coal pile
Dirty hat pulled low cross my face

Through cupped hands and a round tin can
I pretend to hold you to my breast and find
That you’re wavin’ from the backroads, by the rivers of my memory
Ever smilin’, ever gentle on my mind

That you’re wavin’ from the backroads, by the rivers of my memory
Ever smilin’ ever gentle on my mind
That you’re wavin’ from the backroads, by the rivers of my memory
For hours you’re just gentle on my mind

Mental Health ~ Binaural Beats

Standard

Life isn’t easy when you have gone through traumas in your past. Your mind and mood is a little more fragile than the minds of those who are not challenged with their wellbeing.

There are many different ways of dealing with your mental health. For many the right way is traditional medication prescribed by your GP, therapy, and exercise. For other’s a more creative and “out of the box” approach is helpful.

I am a stubborn person who has been raised in the believe that both approaches have their time and throughout my life, I have realized that I am the only one who really knows what is good for me and that I have the freedom to experiment with healing methods.

That is the reason why I experiment with binaural beats since last year. I stumbled over them by accident when I was looking for advice how to deal with my teeth grinding that has become so bad that I woke up every morning with a tension headache that nearly killed me. I am not a fan of painkillers, the mouthguard I used since years didn’t seem to help and the anti-depressant my GP prescribed me to relax my neck muscles put me in a spin downwards with my mental health.

So I tried to find out more about Bruxism and different methods to deal with it. That lead me to this video

“Well,” I thought, “what doesn’t kill me makes me stronger!” and “Surely it can’t make my teeth grinding worse!” and so I put the little video on every night when I went to bed.

And placebo effect or not, it helped. It hardly ever happens now that I wake up with a headache from my teeth grinding.

You know how much I have struggled in the las years with my mental health. Again, I am not a fan of traditionally prescribed medication as it usually makes my situation worse and I have used holistic methods for a long time to deal with depression.

However, I have realized that a mental health problem is a complicated system of fears, traumas and a feeling of helplessness that needs to be addressed on many levels. Therefore, I wondered if binaural beats could help me here too.

I stumbled over this video which I added to my bed time routine and I found it extremely soothing and helpful.

And even though I have stumbled over my stress levels and they have brought me down again overall I feel I deal with stress and a situation like that much better than I have before.

It is even the case that I have started to change the direction of my thoughts and ponderings from my past more to the future and a wish to overcome my fears and move forward. And, you guessed it, again a binaural beats video is helpful.

I see my journey to a better mental health every much from a spiritual point of view. Moving forward is all fine and good but if you do not feel grounded and save it won’t work. I experienced this many times and therefore I always listen to this video first before I allow myself to tackle my fears.

Don’t get me wrong. These videos are not a substitute for the advice from a health professional who knows about mental health and I use the courses and therapists from the Wellbeing Service here in the region on a regular basis.

However, they are a good addition and one part of the self-care I have developed to stay in good mental health and in balance. In my experience, it is very important to stay active in your self-care and develop your own way of staying in balance. That gives you a feeling of being in control which is beneficial for any mental health issue.

What does help you to stay in balance?

Song Lyric Sunday ~ Rag'n Bone Man

Standard

I have been out of Song Lyric Sunday for a while but today I just have to share with you my first music discovery in 2017.

We were watching Jools Hollands Hootenanny* as we were pretty tired of seeing the same fireworks early in the morning on January 1st, 2017. One of his guests was the above mentioned Rag’n Bone Man.

If you have a look at the video you can imagine what I thought when he went to the stage. None of us expected some deep soulful blues but rather a Hip Hop act. But man then he started singing and he blew me away.

Apparently, the young man does perform music for a few years but has brought out his debut hit single last year in July and it has been number one of the charts in countries like Germany, Switzerland, and Austria.

His debut album will come out in March 2017 and I certainly will buy it. I have listened to a few more of his songs on YouTube and they are of similar intensity.

But I do not want to keep you longer from listening to the song and reading the lyrics. Enjoy!

*please don’t ask me what a “Hootenanny” is. I have no idea whatsoever. However, the one Jools Holland does is rather entertaining and certainly offers a vast variety of music!

Lyrics thanks to A-Z Lyrics

“Human”

(I’m only human
I’m only, I’m only
I’m only human, human)Maybe I’m foolish, maybe I’m blind
Thinking I can see through this and see what’s behind
Got no way to prove it so maybe I’m lied

But I’m only human after all, I’m only human after all
Don’t put your blame on me
Don’t put your blame on me

Take a look in the mirror and what do you see
Do you see it clearer or are you deceived in what you believe

Cause I’m only human after all, you’re only human after all
Don’t put the blame on me
Don’t put your blame on me

Some people got the real problems
Some people out of luck
Some people think I can solve them
Lord heavens above
I’m only human after all, I’m only human after all
Don’t put the blame on me
Don’t put the blame on me

Don’t ask my opinion, don’t ask me to lie
Then beg for forgiveness for making you cry, making you cry

Cause I’m only human after all, I’m only human after all
Don’t put your blame on me, don’t put the blame on me

Some people got the real problems
Some people out of luck
Some people think I can solve them
Lord heavens above
I’m only human after all, I’m only human after all
Don’t put the blame on me
Don’t put the blame on me
I’m only human I make mistakes
I’m only human that’s all it takes to put the blame on me
Don’t put the blame on me

‘Cause I’m no prophet or messiah
You should go looking somewhere higher

I’m only human after all, I’m only human after all
Don’t put the blame on me, don’t put the blame on me
I’m only human I do what I can
I’m just a man, I do what I can
Don’t put the blame on me
Don’t put your blame on me

Bee's Mindful Monday ~ Now to something entirely different

Standard

So, Colleen has invited me to make Mindful Monday my own and here I go:

What can be entirely different on Mindful Monday? A video?

Well, yes I have used videos before to showcase things but I stumbled over one that I think brings mindfulness closer to the everyday person and the everyday busy professional.

I am speaking about Ruby Wax probably not everybody’s favourite person but I believe she has a great way of explaining how we can incorporate mindfulness into our busy lives.

So here we go with a video by Talks at Google

I have to say I think she is fabulous!

Survivor Saturday: Liz Mullinar – Treating the core problem of childhood trauma.

Standard

This lady knows what she is talking about:

~ Healing from childhood trauma is possible

~ It’s not my fault what happened in my childhood

~ I am not ashamed

I like the questions Liz Mullinar is asking so here it is: Liz Mullinar on TEDxNewy via TEDx Talks on YouTube

Followers, Followers, Followers ~ Nachfolger, Verfolger, Nachfolger

Standard

There are two words for follower in German: 1 is “Nachfolger” which means more a person who follows in someone’s footsteps or follows someone’s teachings like the apostles with Jesus.

The other is “Verfolger” which means more a predator or stalker. I have always wondered why many German speaking people use this expression for their followers in Blogs or on Twitter. I definitely do not want to be “verfolgt/stalked” ;-).

Now what does this have to do with the phoenix~follower of the day?

Nothing really lol

Still I would like to introduce you to the Norwegian Rapper MesaYah who I stumbled upon via Singing over the bones & rising from the ashes as he has created an impressive song and video to support survivors of abuse and rape:

Perfect World

If you have not yet stumbled upon him in YouTube please go and have a look and listen :-).

Garnix! 🙂

Trotzdem moechte ich Euch gerne den norwegischen Rapper MesaYah vorstellen ueber den ich bei Singing over the bones & rising from the ashes gestolpert bin, da er ein beeindruckendes Lied und Video geschrieben hat, das Ueberlebende von Missbrauch und Vergewaltigung unterstuetzt:

Perfect World

Falls Ihr ihm noch nicht auf YouTube auf die Spur gekommen seid, dann macht Euch mal auf und schaut vorbei :-).
