AN INTERVIEW WITH Cary Allen Stone & Tyler Hosea
Two of the Authors
MOTHER’S DAY MAGIC
The story we’ve contributed Is
Aviator Jane Cochran created the WAC during WWII and retired an airline captain. Flying was her life, her identity, until she retired and realized her family was far more important than anything else in her life.
What Was The Inspiration For Your Mother’s Day Magic Story?
We like strong, intelligent women as characters because they can take on challenges with great confidence, while at the same time be able to open their hearts to those they care about.
How much research was involved in writing your story? How did you go about it?
Both of us have spent considerable time in aviation. While the profession is exciting, it also takes a tremendous toll on crewmembers and their families.
How often do your characters surprise you by doing or saying something totally unexpected?
Always, we love to expose both the good sides and bad of characters. When a character takes a detour, it’s always fun to see how far they will go if given the chance.
Do you miss spending time with your characters when you finish writing this story?
Oh, but we do spend time together because they stay with us. We’re forever listening to what they want to do in the next story.
What writer has been your biggest inspiration?
Clive Cussler’s action-adventure stories for me. Tyler’s a big fan of Karen Slaughter, but she reads everything and everybody. There’s never a hand without a book with Tyler.
What non-writer had the most influence on your life And why?
Sir Ridley Scott, film director. I was on a location scout with him in the Caribbean for two weeks and he mentored me on my writing. Tyler’s mother was a major influence in creating Ty’s love of books.
How important is the choosing of character names to you? Have you ever decided on a name and then changed it because it wasn’t right for the character?
We look for character names constantly. My hair stylist’s name, years ago, was Lori Powers. Lori Powers became one of my major characters in my Jake Roberts Novels. Tyler finds more names in films. We used the name of a girl at the popcorn counter in the AMC because it was so unique.
Do you allow others to read your work in progress, or do you keep it a secret until you’ve finished your first draft?
Secret always until the editors are finished.
What inspired you to write your first book?
I had written an entire manuscript, an action-adventure but never published it. I looked at it as my practice run. The feedback I received was invaluable. My first published book was a true crime story about “filicide”––the parental murder of children. It was a case study on someone I knew personally that murdered her six-year-old son.
FOREVER SUNSHINE is Tyler’s first book. We plan to add four more short stories to it.
What might we be surprised to know about you?
We know what the CocaCola recipe is.
Tyler and I decided to tell the story of a brother and sister whose mother was a famous, accomplished aviator spanning a career of forty years. Their mother passed away on Mother’s Day. Before they left the funeral, both were given a letter that their mother requested they read on the one-year anniversary of her passing. We decided to do the story that way because I was abandoned and never knew my mother, so telling someone else’s story seemed the right thing to do.
About authors Cary Allen Stone and Tyler Hosea
“Cary Allen Stone is a brilliant writer of psychological thrillers and murder mysteries. He writes with a keen eye for detail–the graphic violence is chillingly realistic. He delivers a taut, darkly introspective, cunning and well-executed plot by leaning towards the fallible side of his characters. He understands the criminal mind avoiding the stereotypes that dominate crime thrillers. There is a good balance of chemistry and conflict, good and evil that fans will find enthralling. His characters become embedded in our psyches and the pace of his unraveling of his thriller is a ride not easily forgotten. Cary Allen Stone is an important name to watch. This is one superb crime writer!” ––Grady Harp, Amazon Hall of Fame Top 100 Reviewervine Voice
Cary Allen Stone’s aviation career began in 1972 and ended in 2014. Aviation gave him a unique perspective of life, and led to his writing. In 1992, he flew film director Sir Ridley Scott for ten days during a location scout, and was encouraged in his writing. He has a Bachelor of Arts degree, was a main character in an AAA Club advertisement, and was an extra in several feature films. He has done voice-over, radio commercials, and standup comedy. He is a member of the Phoenix Writer’s Club and the International Thriller Writers.
Tyler Hosea has built a career in aviation for the past twenty years. She has been an editor, and reviewer, and has been a collaborator on my books the past eleven years. Our book “Forever Sunshine” in the Mother’s Day Magic box set is her breakout story as an author.
